We are First Christian Church, Claremore; an Open and Affirming congregation of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). We agree that God’s love extends to all people, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, political ideology, age, gender identity/expression, mental and physical ability, or any other designation that has brought them the pain of exclusion and discrimination by the Church and society. With open hearts and minds, we welcome every child of God to fully participate in the life and ministries of this congregation.
Scripture
We take the Bible too seriously to take it literally. Rather than having tests of faith and creedal statements, we critically and thoughtfully study scripture, taking into account the history and background – the context – in which it was written as well as its genre.
Communion
The Disciples of Christ tradition includes what we call an "Open Table." This means that all are welcome to partake of communion - there is no requirement of membership or test of faith. Because our tradition makes room for various theologies, there are different ways of understanding what the bread and the cup represent. We are united in the idea that the Table is where we are welcome and where we welcome all as we seek to remember and follow Jesus' life and teachings.
